Croft on Vatersay

Paintings can’t speak, so no reason to suppose

an elegiac theme would emanate from this one. My eye

didn’t at first detect the roof-hole that declares

this croft’s abandoned; was once where someone

lived. Smoke not cloud, curled out of those chimneys.

There must have been blue skies - entirely so - sometimes

and laughter and good sleep after hard work, and flowers

beginning to come through to signal spring around

the doorway, pushing its green smells into the gaps

near window frames, and high summer sporting its brashness.

Surely there weren’t always such black clouds overhead?

That jaunty-coloured roof declares that though I’m sinking back

into the ground I rose from, I’ll do so with panache

or smeddum. I can outface the wind and rain,

henchmen of that stolid, plodding bully, Time.

Joan McGavin

Smeddum is a Scottish word meaning energy or gumption.
